Speed Skating At The 2014 Winter Olympics – Men's 500 Metres
The men's 500 metres speed skating competition of the 2014 Sochi Olympics was held at Adler Arena Skating Center on 10 February 2014. Michel Mulder won the gold medal. Qualification A total of forty speed skaters could qualify for this distance, with a maximum of four skaters per country. The top 20 of the 2013–14 ISU Speed Skating World Cup – Men's 500 metres, men's 500 metres World Cup standings after 2013–14 ISU Speed Skating World Cup – World Cup 4, World Cup 4 in Berlin secured a spot for their country. Then the additional 20 spots were awarded based on a time ranking of all times skated in the World Cup and the 2014 World Sprint Speed Skating Championships. A reserve list was also made. Adler Arena Skating Center
The Adler Arena Trade And Exhibition Center (Адлер-Арена) is an 8,000-seat speed skating rink, speed skating oval in the Sochi Olympic Park, Olympic Park, Sochi, Russia. It opened in 2012 and looks like an iceberg or ice fault. The center hosted the speed skating events at the 2014 Winter Olympics. Original plans for after the Olympics were for the Adler Arena to be turned into an exhibition center. It cost United States Dollar, $32.8 million to build the venue, including the temporary works for the Olympics. Before the Olympics it hosted the 2013 Russian Speed Skating Championships in December 2012 and the 2013 World Single Distance Speed Skating Championships from 21 to 24 March 2013. Gilmore Junio
Gilmore Junio (born August 6, 1990), also known as Gimoy, is a Canadian speedskater from Calgary. He competes primarily in the short distances of 500 m and 1000 m. A three-time Olympian, Junio competed at the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi, 2018 Olympic Games in PyeongChang, and 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing. Career Junio won his first ISU World Cup event when he tied for the victory at the event in Salt Lake City during the 2013–14 season. He qualified for both the 500 m and 1,000 m at the 2014 Winter Olympics. After finishing in 10th place in the 500 m, Junio gave up his spot to Canadian teammate Denny Morrison, who went on to win the silver medal in the 1,000 m. After the race, he said, "I called it, so it feels good to be a prophet. A lot of kudos goes to this guy orrisonbecause he made it happen." Keiichiro Nagashima
is a Japanese long track speed skater specialising in the sprint distances 500 and 1000 metres. Nagashima has won two World Cup races and has three Japanese domestic titles. He is a member of the Nidec Sankyo speed skating team. Career Nagashima spent three years competing in domestic Japanese races before getting selected for the World Cup sprint event in Nagano in December 2004. Before that, he had several fourth-place finishes in Japanese Championships, getting pipped to the third place in the October 2004 2 × 500 metre Championship by then world-record holder Hiroyasu Shimizu. The Nagano races were the first sprint races of the season, and in his debut race Nagashima finished third, 0.05 seconds behind joint winners Shimizu and Jeremy Wotherspoon. Joji Kato
(born 6 February 1985) is a Japanese speedskater whose specialty is in the sprinting distance event of 500 metres. At the age of 17 he became the first junior speedskater to skate the 500 metres in less than 35 seconds. Until 9 March 2007 he was the world record holder with the 34.30 he skated in Salt Lake City on 19 November 2005. He lost the world record to Lee Kang-seok, who skated 34.25 in Salt Lake City. At the age of 20, he became the 500 metres world champion at the 2005 World Single Distance Championships, leaving behind Hiroyasu Shimizu and Jeremy Wotherspoon. After this achievement he was considered to be one of the favourites for achieving a medal at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin.
